Senior Business Development Specialist, Antitrust

Our UK antitrust team has quickly established itself as one of the leading antitrust practices in the UK, advising on many of the most significant transactions in recent years.

The team is led by 7 partners and 2 senior counsel forming an integral part of Cleary Gottlieb’s global practice, which is universally recognized as one of the world’s leading antitrust practices. The team advises clients on the competition aspects of some of the largest matters globally.

Purpose

This role is to support business development and client development activities for the UK antitrust group and would report into the EMEA Antitrust PG Manager.

  • Lead on the preparation of pitches working closely with lawyers and colleagues.
  • Be responsible for all standard materials (credentials, pitches, bios etc.).
  • Compile local and pan-European legal directory and award submissions.
  • Facilitate communication between partners within practices, industry groups or offices.
  • Identify and communicate new business opportunities.
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities and support initiatives.
  • Support implementation of Practice Group plans.
  • Support the firm’s client feedback program as well as client teams.
  • Carry out research, including on competitors, clients, markets.
  • Lead on pan-European business development projects.
  • Supervise the organisation and execution of events.

Major Tasks

Practice Support

  • Provide advanced support to partners and lawyers in the UK antitrust Practice Group.
  • Collaborate closely with the EMEA PG BD Manager in executing and enhancing the Practice Group plan.
  • Oversee the maintenance of key messages, marketing materials, standard slides, credentials, pitch materials and bios for the group.
  • Support analysis and tracking of key clients and targets, contributing to the development of high-level business strategies.
  • Lead and advance cross-selling efforts to optimize opportunities and foster client relationships.
  • Compile local and pan-European legal directory and award submissions.
  • Leading the organisation of partner meetings, including preparing agendas, documenting actions and following-up on actions agreed.
  • Collaborate closely with Marketing and Communications teams on profile raising and thought-leadership initiatives for key practices and sectors.
  • Prepare internal PG reports, providing nuanced insights and recommendations.

Pitch Support

  • Supervise the preparation of credentials and pitches, tailoring materials for individual clients.
  • Ensure that standard text and materials for pitches and bios is stored and tracked.
  • Ensure consistency of pitch material and seek improvements in quality.
  • Support client presentations.

Client Relationship Management

  • Contribute to client feedback program by assisting with the preparation and follow-up of feedback sessions.
  • Provide support to client teams.
  • Keep partners informed of developments at key clients, offering a strategic perspective.
  • Analyse research on clients, people and markets working together with the Global Competitive Research Team.
  • Manage data held on key clients, especially in Microsoft Dynamics.

Client Events

  • Identify speaking opportunities in line with the objectives of the practice or to promote individual lawyers.
  • Have a good understanding of relevant event organizers.
  • Supervise the creation of invitee lists.
  • Create project plan for event.
  • Assist with reporting.

Marketing and Communication

  • Work with Marketing and PR team on the implementation of the relevant objectives from the Practice Group plan.
  • Work with the PR/Media team on promotion of publications/client reports.
  • Support and advise lawyers regarding the publication of articles or speaking engagements.
  • Oversee contact lists and mailing lists for key clients and practices.
  • Support on promotion via social media channels.

Skills and Competencies

Education/Experience

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years’ business development experience in an international law firm or professional services environment.

  • Extensive knowledge of business and financial markets, showcasing a good understanding of the antitrust law.
