Responsible AI Principles
Last Updated: August 2024
Cleary Gottlieb has a long tradition of responsibly embracing innovation to augment our capabilities and deliver leading-edge excellence in client service. The firm is committed to the highest standards of social responsibility and ethical conduct and has built an internal governance framework, anchored in emerging regulatory standards and industry best practices, that is designed to empower ethical use, deployment and oversight of emerging technologies, including AI. These Responsible AI Principles reflect our firm’s operationalization of AI risk management and demonstrate transparency in the way we work. Cleary uses tools that incorporate AI and generative AI in accordance with the principles below:
- Alignment with Firm Values and Ethical Standards: The firm selects, develops and leverages AI systems in alignment with firm values and policies, responsible AI principles, client requirements, and our legal, ethical and regulatory obligations.
- Vendor Selection Prioritizing Safety, Security, Confidentiality and Accuracy: We assess and only use AI systems that demonstrate robust safety and security programs and industry best practices designed to achieve accuracy, transparency, and reasonable explainability in outputs. Vendors are subject to strict confidentiality and data privacy obligations for the protection of the firm and our clients.
- Accountability and Human Oversight: While generative AI can enhance our work, it is not a substitute for the expertise and judgment of our attorneys. Our people exercise professional judgment in the appropriateness of using AI-generated content in each specific case, oversee our use of AI, review output, and remain accountable and responsible for work product generated with AI assistance.
- Transparency: We are transparent internally and externally regarding the firm’s responsible use of AI technology.
- Global Governance: Cleary fully commits to the responsible use of AI and human-centered AI governance across our global platform and actively engages in the broader global discussion on the ethical and responsible use of these technologies.
As regulatory and professional requirements, technologies and client needs evolve, we actively assess our AI governance framework to ensure that it continues to support our firm’s responsible use of AI.
