Our founders established Cleary Gottlieb in 1946 with the simultaneous opening of offices in New York and Washington, D.C., and we opened our Bay Area offices in 2021 after decades of working with clients in the area.

With approximately 600 lawyers, New York is our largest office and an important center of the firm’s activity. The office is representative of our comprehensive U.S. and global practice, with lawyers working in all of our firm’s principal practice areas. Our Washington, D.C. office has approximately 100 lawyers, and more than one-third of our partners have senior government experience. This office is particularly renowned for its regulatory and antitrust work, providing premier counsel to clients facing challenging transactions and global enforcement actions. Lawyers in our Bay Area offices, located in Silicon Valley and San Francisco, focus on the evolving transactional, disputes, and regulatory needs of our clients in California and across the region.

Many of our U.S.-based lawyers have had international experience and have spent years in one or more of our offices around the world, contributing to their ability to manage international and cross-border assignments skillfully and efficiently.
