Cleary Gottlieb represented Trinity Church Wall Street, as amicus curiae, in support of the parents of the victims of the Sandy Hook mass shooting, in a lawsuit that the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed to proceed.
On November 12, 2019, the Supreme Court blocked an appeal to dismiss the lawsuit to pursue claims against Remington Arms, the manufacturer of the assault rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
The decision lets stand a groundbreaking four-to-three decision in the Connecticut Supreme Court, which held that the plaintiffs could bring suit against the manufacturer, distributer, and retailer of the assault rifle used in the attack. The development received widespread media coverage in NPR, CNN, The Washington Post, NBC News, VICE, USA Today, and other news outlets.
