Cleary Gottlieb partners Lawrence Friedman and Jonathan Blackman were selected as The American Lawyer’s “Litigators of the Week” for their roles defeating a pair of cases against two major banks sued under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The victories, which came after 14 years of litigation for National Westminster Bank, a major retail bank in the UK and part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, and Crédit Lyonnais, a major retail bank in France and part of the Crédit Agricole Group, cleared the banks of billions in potential damages, had the plaintiffs prevailed in showing that they provided material support for acts of terrorism that took place between 2001 and 2004 in Israel and the Palestinian Territories.
Litigators of the Week are selected by The American Lawyer for their work on recent impactful matters involving new precedents and bold strategies.
