Cleary Gottlieb is representing pro bono client Brooklyn Community Bail Fund (BCBF) in connection with the National Bail Out Campaign.
The campaign began with National Bail Out Day, a multi-state initiative to bail mothers and caregivers out of local jails and immigration detention centers so they could spend Mother’s Day 2017 with their families. Agreements relating to the campaign were signed in early May 2017.
BCBF is collaborating on the campaign with a coalition of grassroots nonprofit organizations involved in racial justice and criminal justice reform efforts across the country. In addition to posting bail, participating groups have held teach-ins regarding the impact of money bail and incarceration on their communities. The campaign has continued throughout June 2017, with participating organizations bailing out community members for Father’s Day, Pride and Juneteenth. BCBF serves as the recipient of funds donated to support the campaign, which are in turn disbursed to participating groups for use in the campaign and their ongoing criminal justice reform and on-the-ground organizing efforts.
Lawyers Alliance for New York is serving as co-counsel on the matter.
