Cleary Gottlieb partner George Cary has been named a “Dealmaker of the Year” by The American Lawyer for his role as lead global antitrust counsel to Dow Chemical in its $130 billion merger of equals with DuPont.
The publication highlights George’s role in the merger, which he describes as “among the most challenging” he’s done in his career. The merger, finalized in February after the U.S. Department of Justice gave its approval, required George to help Dow overcome dozens of overlaps on products and industries. The deal also required clearances from regulators in over 20 jurisdictions, including the United States, the European Union, China, Brazil, South Africa, and India.
Each year, The American Lawyer honors lawyers who display “creativity, client commitment and a business savvy that delivered on their clients’ objectives.”
In February, George was also named “Antitrust Lawyer of the Year” for the third consecutive year by Benchmark Litigation.
