Cleary and Lighthouse Win “Best Provider Collaboration” at American Lawyer Industry Awards

November 14, 2024

Cleary Gottlieb and Lighthouse have won “Best Provider Collaboration” at The American Lawyer Industry Awards for their innovative approach to improving efficiency and accuracy and deploying a “participatory” AI approach to e-discovery and litigation technology.

Cleary and Lighthouse were recognized for leveraging technology to produce privilege logs as part of large litigations and investigations. Together, they developed a large language model (LLM) and used predictive AI to help identify privileged documents, and separately leveraged an LLM in the form of generative AI to draft the log entries. The first major test of this tool produced an entire 80,000-line privilege log that was accepted by the opposing party without challenge.

According to Christian J. (CJ) Mahoney, Counsel and Global Head of e-Discovery and Litigation Technology at Cleary, the project demonstrated the power of combining powerful AI technology with thoughtful guidance from a law firm and service provider, working closely together. “Our long-standing relationship with Lighthouse continues to truly benefit our clients, and this award is simply the latest proof of that.”

The American Lawyer Industry Awards recognize outstanding achievements and contributions made by individuals, law firms, and legal departments across various practice areas and specialties.
