Cleary Gottlieb represented Civic Suds Corporation (Civic Suds) in securing federal tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3), after helping the organization incorporate as a Delaware not-for-profit.
Civic Suds is dedicated to providing children and adults with convenient access to educational and other community programming within laundromats located in underserved communities. It will realize its mission by partnering with laundromat owners and operators to create spaces inside laundromats that are conducive to learning and community programming. Civic Suds or a nonprofit partner will then conduct free community programs inside those laundromats on a daily basis.
The Civic Suds programs aspire to address the many different needs of community members, including by improving literacy through group reading in partnership with local libraries; offering practical advice about vital topics like personal finance and tax preparation; providing access to basic medical care, such as flu shots and wellness screenings; hosting community service events with corporate partners; developing new technologies such as computer and phone applications that extend learning opportunities for laundromat clients; and conducting studies involving laundromat clients to better understand the needs and behaviors of individuals and families living in underserved communities.
