Michael L. Ryan

Michael Ryan’s practice focuses on financial and corporate matters, ranging from mergers and acquisitions to securities offerings.

He has extensive experience counseling corporate executives and corporate boards. For more than two decades, Michael devoted most of his time to serving as principal outside counsel to private equity firm TPG. More recently, he represented the Republic of Argentina in its dealings with holdout external creditors preceding the Republic’s 2016 return to the international capital markets.

He also has broad experience in the development of financial products, including the first collateralized mortgage obligation and the early development of collateralized bond obligations.

Michael joined the firm in 1978, became a partner in 1986, and became senior counsel in 2019. Prior to joining the firm, he was a senior nonfiction editor and director of contracts at E.P. Dutton & Co. He served as New York City Urban Fellow in the administration of John V. Lindsay, and was a founding director of the Public Interest Law Foundation at New York University.
