New Comprehensive U.S. Sanctions on the Syrian Regime

President Obama has issued an Executive Order tightening U.S. economic sanctions on Syria. The new sanctions, which are effective immediately, include:

  • an asset freeze and a comprehensive ban on transactions subject to U.S. jurisdiction affecting all entities owned or controlled by the Syrian Government and a number of Syrian oil companies

  • a broad prohibition on U.S. persons’ dealing directly or indirectly in Syrian-origin petroleum products

  • a ban on U.S. investment in Syria

  • expansion of the ban on export or re-export (including by foreign persons) of U.S.-origin goods to Syria to cover services.
