FERC’s New Focus on Transparency and Protecting Against Manipulation of Natural Gas Markets

On January 17, 2008 the Washington office authored an Alert Memorandum entitled, “FERC’s New Focus on Transparency and Protecting Against Manipulation of Natural Gas Markets.” The two-page memo discusses FERC’s recent regulatory and enforcement initiatives, which include expansion of reporting obligations to cover some non-jurisdicational transactions and the proposed expansion of pipeline capacity posting requirements to cover some intrastate (as well as interstate) pipelines. These new reporting requirements are part of the broader effort to increase market transparency to impede manipulation the natural gas markets.
