“The Law and FGM: An Overview of 28 African Countries,” a pro bono research project developed by 28 Too Many in collaboration with TrustLaw, Cleary Gottlieb lawyers in London and Paris, and attorneys from other global law firms, has won the award for Best Collaboration Initiative at The Lawyer Awards 2019.
Cleary lawyers in London and Paris conducted research into the background legal frameworks and enforcement practices in several African jurisdictions where female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C) is still practiced. This research was carried out for 28 Too Many, an organization working to eradicate FGM/C, and has contributed to a comprehensive report highlighting best practices, lessons learned and recommendations for the formation of sound legal frameworks to address this issue.
The Lawyer Awards judges noted that the work was “a fantastic example of collaboration” and “an extremely ambitious project where profit was not the goal.”
