Black History Month Spotlight Series: Jordan McMeans

February 21, 2025

As part of our Black History Month celebration, we’ve asked our colleagues to reflect on the significance of this month.

Cleary Gottlieb law clerk Jordan McMeans shares some of his thoughts below.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Cleary.

My name is Jordan McMeans, I am from Southington, Connecticut, and I am the oldest of three siblings. I studied political science and gender studies at Villanova University before moving to New York City to attend Columbia Law School. I was a summer associate at Cleary in 2023 and joined the firm as a first-year litigation associate this past October. I am a first-generation law school graduate and the first in my family to practice law.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the creativity, talent, intellect, and perseverance of the Black community. The entire month is a reminder to celebrate and honor the legacy of Black pioneers who navigated discrimination and marginalization and at the same time created culture, art, joy, beauty, and societal change. As a Black queer person, Black History Month is also an opportunity for me to reflect on the immeasurable contributions the Black queer community has had on expanding rights and access for the LGBTQ+ community.

Has your identity impacted how you approach your work and career?

My identity impacts much of how I approach the world, including my work and career. It has driven my passion for equality and justice and motivates me to give back to my community both through pro bono projects, which target systemic equality, and through making myself a resource for other young Black people looking to enter the profession.

Are there any leaders, activists, writers/artists, professionals, or family members who have inspired you?

I am always drawing inspiration from varied sources. I’m inspired by my family members who, despite their own challenges, have always supported and uplifted me, including my late great-grandmother, Edith Russell, who raised 10 children and worked evenings checking engines at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. I’m also inspired by the legacies of activist such as Marsha P. Johnson, whose bravery and passion is in so many ways responsible for the access and opportunity I now experience.

When you’re underrepresented in your chosen field, why is it important to have mentors and sponsors who are invested in you and your career?

Throughout law school and through these initial stages of my career, mentors have been tremendously helpful. Prior to law school, I had practically no connections to anyone who had charted the path I was taking, as a result, I have consistently relied on mentors for guidance, advice, and reassurance.

What are the benefits of joining an affinity group at Cleary?

The affinity groups at Cleary have been a major source of support and guidance during my time here. From my first interactions with Cleary during recruiting until now, I have been able to rely on members of our Black Affinity Group for candid advice. Not only that, but the group has allowed me to develop friendships and connections in the workplace, which has improved my overall experience. Affinity groups create spaces of trust and comfort.

Are there any programs at Cleary that you have been part of that have contributed to your professional journey and feeling included at the firm?

The conference for diverse associates that took place during my time here as a summer and just after I rejoined the firm in October contributed to my sense of inclusion. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the other diverse members of my class and bond over shared experiences. It further demonstrated Cleary’s commitment to supporting its associates of color after recruitment.

What is your favorite thing about working in the legal industry, and why did you choose to work at Cleary?

My favorite thing about working in the legal field is that our work has a meaningful impact on our clients, and there is always an opportunity to learn something new. I chose to come to Cleary based on the firm’s fantastic reputation and global presence. I was also drawn by the people I met throughout the recruiting process, including the teams I worked with over my summer. I have frequently encountered a willingness to help, and even more importantly, a willingness to teach—which led me to believe this would be a great place to begin my career.
