Overview

London, UK

Cleary Gottlieb welcomed 11 young women to its London office as part of the “She Can Be…” initiative by the City of London Lord Mayor’s Appeal to inspire them to consider future careers in the City of London.

Students from Bishop’s Hadfield Girls’ School in London took part in an immersive exercise designed to provide first-hand experience working as lawyers in the City. The young women participated in interactive workplace shadowing with Cleary’s lawyers and professional staff in order to complete a fictional deal, took part in a mock negotiation exercise, and finalized a fictional contract. While working on skills such as problem-solving and communication, the activity enabled the students to meet role models across all departments and seniority levels at the firm.

The students later joined groups from various other schools in Canary Wharf to take part in a series of plenary discussions about the City and career aspirations. Cleary Global Risk Director Sonya Foulds and Chloe Hassard, a trainee solicitor in London, facilitated discussions at the event. Byron Spring, Pro Bono Coordinator in London, joined the “She Can Be…” afternoon panel as a speaker and male ally.

“She Can Be…” is an initiative organized by the Lord Mayor of the City of London to demonstrate the range of career paths available in the City and to enable young women to meet role models in those careers.
