Selected applicants will be invited for interviews with one or more partners and/or associates in Paris. The process may involve several rounds of interviews. Decisions to recruit interns or permanent associates for the Paris office are taken by the Paris Recruiting Committee on the basis of the academic and, if applicable, professional achievements of the applicants and their evaluation by partners and/or associates who interviewed them.

The firm participates in a number of events organized in France by law schools (Paris I, Paris II, etc.), business schools (HEC, Sciences-Po and other academic institutions to provide students with information on the firm and the career opportunities it offers. Typically, the purpose of these events is informational only and students wishing to apply for a permanent position or an internship must apply separately using our online application tool.

Furthermore, the firm participates each year in the New York University International Student Interview Program and the Columbia Overseas-Trained LL.M. Student Interview Program held at the end of January in New York for applicants enrolled in LL.M. programs in the United States. In addition to hiring applicants from these interview programs to begin work directly as associates in the Paris office, we also invite selected students to participate in our International Lawyer Program in New York or Washington before transferring to the Paris office.

Candidate Profile. The Paris office is looking primarily for associates who have completed their legal studies in France and are admitted or about to be admitted to practice law in France as avocats. Because we value highly the willingness and ability of our lawyers to be flexible in their practice and the types of projects they work on, we believe that strong academic achievements in legal studies are essential. In addition, many of our associates hold an LL.M. or M.C.J. from a U.S. (or sometime British or Canadian) law school and/or degrees in business, management, accounting or political sciences. Fluency in the English language is essential.

Occasionally, the Paris office also hires lawyers from other countries.

U.S. lawyers wishing to work in the Paris office should send their application to the New York legal recruiting team indicating their desire to work in the Paris office.

Lateral Positions. We welcome applications from lawyers with relevant professional experience, and we make lateral hiring decisions based on current needs.

Please refer to the sections “About the Hiring Process” or “Positions at Cleary Gottlieb” to apply for a position.

Stagiaire Program. The Paris office regularly hires stagiaires, typically for three months internships. Although this is not a pre-requisite, stagiaires generally have already completed several years of legal studies, and often stages at other firms, before they join us. Internships at our firm qualify for mandatory stages required towards the Certificat d’aptitude à la profession d’avocat (CAPA).

The aim of a stage is to give the stagiaire a chance to work with us and to get to know us – and vice versa – with a  view to possible permanent employment as an associate of the firm.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate high academic achievement and a genuine interest in the law.  Fluency in the English language is essential.
