Aside from renewable hydrogen, low-carbon hydrogen can also contribute to decarbonising the EU and reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels.
As part of the Hydrogen and gas markets decarbonisation package the Commission has put forward a definition of low-carbon hydrogen which would encompass several ways of producing low-carbon hydrogen. Recent debates show that Member States and EU institutions seem to agree on qualifying hydrogen produced from nuclear energy as “low-carbon” hydrogen.
